Budget Phone Doubts, Settled
The questions students, parents and careful spenders ask us most, answered without jargon.
What is the best budget phone overall?
For most people on a tight budget, the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G gives the best value per year: around US$199 with six years of security updates. If you can stretch, the Pixel 9a buys better photos and seven years of support. Both are in the ledger.
Is it worth paying more for the Pixel 9a?
If you keep phones for five years or more and care about photos in dim light, often yes. If you mainly message, browse and stream, the cheaper picks cover your needs and leave money in your pocket.
Are refurbished phones a good idea?
They can be, if bought from a reputable seller with at least a 12-month warranty and a clear battery-health grade. Check that the model still has several years of security updates remaining.
Does water resistance matter?
IP68 (Pixel 9a, Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, moto g power 5G) protects against brief submersion. IP54 (Galaxy A16 5G, CMF Phone 2 Pro) handles splashes and rain. If phones in your house tend to meet sinks and pools, pay for IP68.
How much storage do I need?
128 GB is a sensible minimum. Heavy photo and video takers should choose 256 GB or a phone with a microSD slot, which is cheaper than paying for extra built-in storage.
Will a budget phone work on my carrier?
Check the phone's supported network bands against your carrier's compatibility list. Imported phones — such as the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G in the US — may miss some bands or features like Wi-Fi calling.
Should I buy last year's model?
It can be good value, but updates are counted from launch. Do the sum with the years that remain; our update guide shows how.
Do I need a case and screen protector?
A basic case is a small cost that protects plastic frames and resale value. A screen protector is optional but sensible on phones without premium glass.
Is 5G necessary?
All five phones support 5G, so you do not have to choose. How much it helps depends on coverage where you live and study.
